Today is an extra-special day...it's my father's 83rd birthday. When I asked him what he would like to do, he requested another fun day at Dixon Gardens, just like we had for my birthday in April that I shared with you here. And this fall outing was every bit as pretty and fun! (You might enjoy seeing how Dixon looks in Winter, also). We hope you'll enjoy seeing everything with us!
It's hard to believe that Daddy is 83, isn't it? Doesn't he look dapper? And he's a lot of fun, too....I have to try to keep up with him!
Memphis isn't necessarily known for its beautiful Fall seasons. Some of ours are pretty, and some go from green to brown, depending on how much rain we received in Spring and Summer. But, this year we must have gotten plenty, because this is one of the prettiest Fall seasons I have seen in years.
My favorite spot at Dixon: "Europa and the Bull", framed by gorgeous Fall color:
The picturesque entrance to the gardens at Dixon...
aren't these little flowers happy-looking?
I loved the color on these mums. Dixon has beautiful plantings almost year-round, and always something lovely to see.

More breathtaking color...

The back of the museum at Dixon, as seen across the rear lawn from "Europa and the Bull"...
These are called "Spider" mums; I think these were Daddy's favorites.

I was pleasantly surprised to find new water lily blooms this late in the season. I love the reflection on the water.

The ferns in this antique planter will soon be dormant, and it will be fun looking forward to seeing them again next Spring.
This is my father's favorite place at the Dixon...that allee that is lined with the beautiful blooming pink azaleas in Spring.
I hope that you enjoyed seeing how pretty Dixon is in Fall, just as it is in Spring, and celebrating my father's birthday, too. I'm the luckiest woman in the world to have such a wonderful father....Happy Birthday, Daddy!
I hope that you're having a nice start to another autumn weekend. I can't believe how close it is to Thanksgiving, can you? Have you got your menu planned yet? We are taking a short trip to Nashville tomorrow, in hopes of seeing a little more Fall color on the drive before the rains next week take a lot of the leaves down. Have a very happy weekend!

Great pictures. Happy birthday to your Father. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Nashville. I was in Franklin last weekend. Went into Nashville on Sat. and it was interesting to see how the city has changed since I lived there many years ago.

Andrea,
I'm so glad you're back to blogging! I've missed your posts and I've been worried that something had happened. I certainly can understand computer issues as we've had more than our fair share at our place this fall also. I can't wait to read all your latest posts and catch up with you. I see you posted about Collierville. That little spot of heavan sure hasn't changed much since last I visted it (2001 I believe). Take care!
Love, Amanda

going back to hospital
3/03 Mama has taken her radiation and is having her antibiotics. We are hoping the surgery will be Friday to remove the kidney.
They will cut her from her back to the front then down to her groin, remove her bottom rib then the kidney.
The Doctor says she will be down for 6 weeks and will have to take 7-10 meds for a while.
When we left tonight she was on pain meds and said if they keep taking stuff out of her there wasn't going to be enough left when she does pass and asked the doctor to save her rib for her and trying to eat a Krispy cream doughnut and drink Mountain Dew. Her spirits are good and said to tell her darlings hello. Were taking her art and some items y'all had sent some while ago to decorate the room so she has her favorite items around her while recouping. we will keep you updated. Thanks for prayers and thoughts and the treasure and trinkets that have arrived,She is waiting till after the surgery to open goodies sent to give her spirits a lift.
Now I wonted to say a few words about Mama, she has been a great lady who always took in other children off the street to help them ,always sacrificed her life to put us through collage and always wore hand-me-downs so we had the best clothes.Worked had in the garden to can food for us and aways had a smile on her face no matter how bad things got.SHE GAVE UP AND NEVER DATED AFTER HER DIVORCE, WITH NO CHILD SUPPORT TO GIVE ALL HER TIME AND DEVOTED TO US CHILDREN AND ALWAYS GAVE UNCONDITIONED LOVE TO US.
I hope her friends here will keep her in their thoughts till she returns home.
This is Dusty, one of Mama's daughters. She has had a really bad night with the pain,If any of her friends here would like to see a donation in a small creation of art , cards or money it would be greatly appreciated. Her hospital bills and meds are running high.Thank you for any thoughts.
