Jackie Glisson...One of My Personal Design Inspirations

"Just A Decorator" Jackie Glisson is one of my favorite decorators and personal design inspirations, and I'm so fortunate to be able to enjoy his work in person at least several times a year. For the past several years, he has decorated the interior of one of the homes in our region's Vesta Home Show, which showcases the products and efforts of our area's builders, interior and landscape designers, and other professionals involved in the building trades. Jackie's work has been recognized both locally and nationally, and in 2006 his work earned him three Vesta Show awards, including "Best Special Feature", "Best Media Room", and the "People's Choice Award", which is chosen by the thousands of consumers attending the show---that, to me, would be the highest honor of all.

You may have seen his work on HGTV's Designers' Challenge (love that show!), in which he was the one chosen from 3 different designers who presented design proposals to the homeowner couple in that episode. I love his transformation (before/afters below) of a large living area that was nice, but dark and little-used (and perhaps a bit staid for a young, growing family) into an elegant, relaxed, and cheerful space that the family now uses frequently.

The thing that consistently stands out most to me about Jackie's work is that he has the ability to take warm colors and natural elements which he pairs with very fine fabrics and furnishings, and he always creates a space that is approachable and unpretentious. There is no hands-off in Jackie's designs...his rooms and homes are ones that are meant to be used and loved by those who live there, and the friends and family who visit the welcoming spaces he creates. The homes he decorates for Vesta are always the favorites (out of all the homes in the show) of M and our sons, and I always hear men commenting on what a "great house" Jackie's Vesta entries are.
His elegant designs and great sense of color and choice of fabrics are appealing to women, and the relaxed style that he brings to a home is equally welcoming to men. He definitely has the ability to please every member of the family. My younger son has decided that Jackie does the "best media rooms ever!"---have you ever seen a male who doesn't gravitate to the media room?--and M loves Jackie's outdoor rooms, which really are the prettiest I've seen.

Of all Jackie's designs, I think that my personal favorites are the existing homes (as opposed to new construction) he has decorated, including this absolutely charming young girl's room, and also his own beautiful home (photos below). (Edited to add: Jackie just shared with us this sweet footnote about the tulle bedskirt below...it was made from the girl's mother's wedding dress. I just love that!) They are warm and unassumingly elegant, with reverence for the existing architecture. I would readily give Jackie the keys (and decorating carte blanche) to my home, and simply say "decorate it like you did yours". I know that I would be pleased and enjoy living amidst the space that he would create. Jackie Glisson isn't Just A Decorator, he is a creator of home. I hope that you enjoyed seeing Jackie's designs as much as I do, and that your weekend is off to a great start! (as my scanner is presently down, most photos courtesy of HGTV and Just A Decorator).

By noon there will be 4,000,000 comments, so I'm honored to be first! What a great post. This "just a decorator" would certainly be proud of the way you presented him to the blog world. His spaces are gorgeous...warm and inviting. I love the fireplace in his own home. The surround and candlescape are so beautiful. Hope you have a great weekend, Andrea!

I am full of admiration for anyone who can transform the mundane into the spectacular.
It is a special gift to be able to do that for someone else and have them love it.
This designer is definitely gifted.
Thanks for bringing his work to our attention.
Have a lovely Memorial Day weekend..

I've never heard of Jackie Glisson before now (I ought to be embarassed to share that when I started reading your post I thought to myself "I didn't know Jackie Gleason decorated homes"...I know...just pitiful:)

But I do love these photos you've shared here...especially the soft yellow living/sitting room...and the tulle bedskirt :) Wouldn't you just have swooned if you found that on your bed when you were little? :) Or maybe even now...if I didn't have to continually drag cats out from beneath it...while they're still attached...

I didn't recognize the name at first but then I saw that before and after of the HGTV show and I remember him! He did a fantastic job. I always wonder about the designers on that show. Thanks for sharing all those photos. His spaces are beautiful and warm!

Although I didn't remember his name, I recognized that dark paneled room right away. He did such an amazing job with it. I remember being happy that they picked him so we could see how his ideas and designs came to life.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Donna

I love his patio areas. They all look so shady and cool. It is 90 here and I just finished transplanting irises. I'm going to sit and do nothing and pretend I have a patio like that.

Andrea, WOW! This is, without a doubt, the most flattering article ever written about my work. You should start your own shelter magazine (or at least write for one!).

Thanks to each of you for your wonderfully kind comments.

Mrs. G., the really cool thing about the tulle bedskirt in the little girls room is that I had it made from her mother's wedding dress!

Again, many many thanks
Jackie Glisson

Thank you for sharing these! I must admit I love the little girl's room near the end of the post best (perhaps because we are in the middle of changing our little girl's room from toddler-ish to young ladyish)!

now that I see Mr. Glisson himself commented I am doubly embarassed [insert flushed face icon image here, please]

But, you're right...what an heirloom to have created the bedskirt from her mother's wedding dress :) I would have never thought of that...

I made the banner myself. If you want..email me five photos of your choice, and tell me what type of script you would like, and I will see what I can do for you.
The installation part, we might have to work on together!!

Hi Jackie,

I'm proud to say that I was your HGTV producer who found you over the Internet. You're a winner in my book in more ways then one. That article is such a great tribute to your talent! I will always appreciate your Southern hospitality during my trips to Memphis, and I hope our paths cross again!
Warmest wishes,

I am a big fan of Jackie Glisson! He is so gracious (as I see he commented here); I sent an email several years ago just to say I loved his work and history. Imagine my surprise when he responded!

Then on an iVillage decorating forum, myself and two other new decorators were speaking of him and he joined in there as well! Just makes me love him even more!

You shared some great pictures on this post!
